Free SPIRIT Riders is a 501(c)(3) Non-profit corporation and accredited therapeutic riding center at the Premier Level through the Professional association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH, Int.).

Our facility is located in Fond du Lac, WI on 38 acres of land and includes an indoor and outdoor arena.

The purpose of Free SPIRIT Riders’ services is: 1) To promote active therapy 2) To provide a valuable experience that is enjoyable though challenging 3) To promote the rehabilitation of individuals with physical, psychological and learning challenges through equine-facilitated activities. 

Who is eligible to receive services at Free SPIRIT Riders?

Individuals over two years old with a diagnosed developmental, physical, visual, cognitive, emotional or social disability are eligible to receive therapeutic services at FSR. The adults and children we serve present with a variety of physical, cognitive, intellectual, and social disabilities and mental health diagnoses. 

What are some of the benefits of equine-related therapies?

Therapeutic horsemanship and equine-related therapies have been shown to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, and motor development for individuals with physical disabilities. Additionally, equestrian services have shown to improve verbalization and social skills, as well as promote emotional and psychological health and have been used in therapies to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Primary Funding Sources:

As Free SPIRIT Riders is a non-profit organization, our facility and programming is funded primarily through grants, fundraising events and additional fundraising efforts, individual contributions, and fees for services.

How much do therapeutic services at Free SPIRIT Riders cost?

Free SPIRIT Riders offers a variety of therapeutic services, including Therapeutic Riding (TR), Advanced Therapeutic Riding (Adv-TR), Individual 1:1 classes, as well as horse grooming and ground-work. $40 per 1 hour Group TR class, $50 per 1 hour Individual TR class, $25 per 30 minute grooming/ground-work class. 

The majority of our therapeutic services are instructed using a group class format ($40/class) and are primarily held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the afternoons/evenings after school. During the summer, Wednesday morning classes are also offered. Advanced TR classes are scheduled Wednesday evening. Riders who require individual therapeutic services ($50/class) (as assessed based on need) will be scheduled for an individual class time with a riding instructor. Riders are enrolled in one class per week. 

Many of our riders are eligible to receive funding for FSR services through community agency and county program funding.

2018 Riding Season

The 2018 Riding Season Schedule begins in April and runs through November (weather permitting). Our new season structure provides two-week break periods through the year to maintain overall horse health and to allow breaks for riders and volunteers. 

The majority of our therapeutic services are instructed using a group class format and are primarily held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the afternoons/evenings after school. Riders who require individual therapeutic services will be scheduled for an individual class time with a riding instructor. All riders are scheduled for one hour of services per week.
